China Report | Fujian Jiaomei Urban Reclaimed Water Plant: Innovative Water Treatment Model to Improve Urban Quality

In recent years, with the high-quality development of the economy and society in the Taiwan Business Investment Zone, Zhangzhou Taiwan Business Zone introduced China Water Environment Group to carry out a comprehensive water environment management project in the zone in 2016. The second phase expansion project of Jiaomei City Sewage Treatment Plant, as a single sub project of the project, is injecting new vitality into the sustainable development and ecological environment protection of the region. This sub project is not only a key provincial sewage treatment project and a key municipal livelihood project, but also an important milestone in the ecological civilization construction of Zhangzhou City.

Restoring the ecological essence and innovating water management models

On January 2, 2024, the second phase expansion project of Jiaomei City Sewage Treatment Plant was successfully connected to the water supply and commissioning, and a water supply ceremony was held on site. At present, the project has been completed and entered the trial operation phase.

The project is located in Longchi Development Zone, Zhangzhou. The total investment of the project is about 680 million yuan, covering an area of 46.8 acres. It started construction in November 2020 and adopts a fully undergroundconstruction method. The designed treatment capacity is 100,000 tons/day. After being put into use, it will undertake more than 95% of the sewage treatment tasks in the Zhangzhou Taiwan Business Investment Zone.

This project adopts the core technology of China Water Environment Group's distributed undergroundregenerated water ecosystem, demonstrating the important role of engineering technology in ecological civilization construction. Through pattern innovation and upgrading technology of the group's green new infrastructure, sewage treatment facilities are organically integrated with the above ground ecological environment, transforming the negative value of sewage plants into positive value, and creating a new type of ecological complex centered on undergroundreclaimed water plants.

As a comprehensive municipal project consisting of an underground reclaimed water plant and an above ground green park. The project site will be built into an environmentally friendly open sports park, eliminating the "neighborhood avoidance" effect of conventional sewage treatment plants, greatly meeting the growing needs of the people for a beautiful ecological environment, and improving their sense of gain and happiness.

Supporting green development and simultaneously reducing pollution and carbon emissions

The implementation of the project not only improved the sewage treatment capacity of Zhangzhou Taiwan Business Investment Zone, but also achieved harmonious coexistence between ecological environment and urban development through green new infrastructure technology, solved the problem of overflow sewage treatment in Jiaomei City sewage treatment plant, significantly improved environmental quality, significantly reduced sewage overflow phenomenon, and significantly reduced resident complaint rate. According to calculations, an annual reduction of 1460 tons of COD, 91 tons of ammonia nitrogen, 73 tons of total nitrogen, and 27.4 tons of total phosphorus can be achieved.

This project has become a model of ecological civilization construction through technological innovation, not only improving the ecological environment quality of the region, but also providing strong guarantees for the high-quality development of Zhangzhou Taiwan Business Investment Zone. The successful implementation of the project marks a solid step forward for Zhangzhou Taiwan Business Investment Zone in sewage treatment and ecological environment protection, and gradually becomes a benchmark project for ecological civilization construction in Fujian Province and even the whole country.
