Topics in Focus | “Live Up to Lucid Waters and Lush Mountains” Eyes Ecological Remediation of Erhai Lake

April 22 is the 54th World Earth Day, with the theme of "Cherish the earth, human and nature coexist harmoniously." The CCTV "Topics in Focus" program reported the ecological remediation of Erhai Lake in Dali. China has commenced the "ecological remediation projects", which is the holistic conservation and remediation of mountains, rivers, forests, farmlands, lakes, grasslands, and deserts since 2016. The improvement of water quality in Erhai Lake is essential. In this regard, CWEG has carried out pollution interception and diversion project (Phase I) in Erhai Lake. With the improvement of water quality, ottelia acuminata, seen as a touchstone of water quality, has blossomed again in Erhai Lake. The lake also provides a favorable living environment for aquatic animals and plants. Its ecosystem is moving towards a benign circle as the microbial community structure and biodiversity improved.

In recent years, a series of ecological conservation measures have been conducted in the Erhai Lake Basin, including sewage interception and diversion, water quality regulation, biodiversity protection, and the overall remediation of mountains, rivers, forests, farmlands, lakes, grasslands, and deserts.

Erhai Lake required systematic governance. The sewage interception has been completed, which can prevent the discharge of domestic sewage and agricultural sewage into Erhai Lake.

CWEG is in charge of the construction and operation of this project. There are 6 underground WWTPs around Erhai Lake, like an artery forming to intercept and recycle domestic sewage. The DURWecosystem has changed the ways how the world deals with sewage for centuries. Instead of discharging urban sewage as pollutants, we are dedicated to its scientific collection and resource utilization so as to create a stable water resource for cities. The water recycled is used for urban landscape and agriculture while the sewage is intercepted. The Erhai Lake has witnessed a further improvement in its water quality.

The lake also provides a favorable living environment for aquatic animals and plants. Its ecosystem is moving towards a benign circle as the microbial community structure improves and biodiversity increases.

With the progress of ecological remediation, the Erhai Lake ecosystem and its water quality are trending towards better quality. The green mountains make up an immortal painting without pigments dotted; the Erhai Lake plays long-lasting music without strings vibrating, which should be retained forever.
