Guiyang Bureau of Ecology and Environment | A Mysterious System behind Nanming River’s Management

2022-07-14

The 4th International Conference on the Evolution of China Urban Water Environment and Ecology opened in Guiyang from July 8 to 9th. With the theme of “A Better Future for Water Science and Technology”, the conference has attracted representatives from political, industrial, academic and research circles, aiming to progress water ecological construction.

Hou Feng, director of CWEG, also the vice president of Water Environment and Ecology Council of Chinese Society for Urban Studies, delivered a keynote speech. In his speech “Distributed Underground Reclaimed Water Ecosystems Promote Water Science and Technology”, he clarified that the successful management of Nanming River, the mother river of Guiyang, is a great example of how the DURWecosystems help to improve urban water environment. It’s not about improving water quality and quantity only, but to promote ecological security, ecological restoration, resource utilization, so as to achieve high-quality and sustainable development of cities. “The DURWecosystem originated from Nanming River, and its core value lies in the scientific collection and resource utilization of waste water to create the second source of water for cities and towns. Adhering to independent technology innovation and practice, CWEG has undertaken a number of national key scientific projects, further explored a way towards resource utilization.” Hou Feng said.

The Nanming Distributed Underground Reclaimed Water Ecosystem is the world’s first engineering practice of DURWecosystems and the plant-river-lake integration mode within cities. Rated as a world leader, the DURWecosystem is now a national technology for upgrading green infrastructure recommended by the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment. On May 25th, the State Council details Opinion on Better Use of Existing Infrastructure and Assets to Boost Effective Investment. It has made clear that construction of underground WWTPs according to local conditions will be advanced along with the integrated exploitation of underground and ground space to make better use of the existing assets. The Underground WWTP has advantages in utilizing water resources and reducing the investment of pipe network. This opinion will, in some way, stimulate its market demands.

A number of national demonstration projects of DURWecosystems have been built in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Dali and other cities, covering scenarios of water environment treatment and resource utilization which deserved to be popularized across the nation.

Dr. Hou Feng also pointed out that the DURWecosystem not only improves the utilization rate of sewage and land resources, but also provides more public service products for cities. It’s a solution for both China and countries that lack lands and water all over the world.
