"Returning water to the people", continuously improving the ecological environment of living water

The Meishe River, located next to the recycled water plant, is about 16 kilometers long and flows through the densely populated main urban area of Haikou. It passes through 493 residential communities and 16 urban villages, benefiting a total population of over 300000 people. It is the "mother river" of Haikou.

With the development of cities, the total amount of domestic sewage around the Meishe River has increased, and the ecological base flow of the river is small, which once caused serious pollution. In 2018, after systematic governance, it gradually regained its former vitality and was rated as one of the top ten ecological governance cases for black and odorous rivers in China.

The first step in the ecological protection of the Meishe River is to design the collection, treatment, and utilization of sewage, and use the treated water as a stable supplementary water source for the city, which has become a new challenge. In order to fundamentally control black and odorous water bodies, Haikou City has carried out the construction of new sewage treatment facilities, improved sewage treatment and collection capabilities, and carried out "root cause" treatment.

In order to promote green and sustainable development of the city, in 2021, the China Water Environment Group Haikou Ding Village sunken recycled water plant will be put into operation, with underground sewage treatment facilities supporting the surface municipal ecological park, becoming the first sunken recycled water plant constructed in Hainan.

In the underground water plant, workers shuttle between bright equipment rooms, monitoring the smooth operation of various equipment. The water plant will treat and utilize the wastewater on site, with the tail water meeting the Class IV standard for surface water environmental quality. The effluent quality is clear and bright, with a portion used for reclaimed water reuse instead of tap water for urban municipal watering, road cleaning, etc., and a portion used as a stable water source for on-site ecological replenishment of Fengxiang Wetland Park and Meishe River, achieving secondary utilization of water resources.

Arriving at the underground factory area and following the footsteps of the water plant staff, one can embark on an immersive "science popularization journey". Visiting sedimentation tanks, biological treatment process sections, etc. in sequence, visitors can experience the purification process of water while watching, listening, and learning through sound and light films, sand table models, and easy to understand language provided by instructors.

At the same time, the entire water plant saves 2/3 of the land compared to traditional water plants, greatly improving the ecological environment quality in the project service area, feeding back the neighbors in the most simple way, enhancing the happiness and satisfaction of surrounding residents, and greatly enhancing the commercial value and value-added space of the riverside area and surrounding land. Green mountains and clear waters are like mountains of gold and silver, which is fully reflected in the management of the Meishe River.

In 2023, Meishe River was selected as the second "Most Beautiful Hometown River" by the Ministry of Water Resources. In 2024, the Dingcun sinking type recycled water plant was awarded the national fine operation and management five-star benchmark water plant, becoming a model of "six water co governance" in Hainan Province.
