The Ministry of Ecology and Environment recently unveiled the second batch of exceptional cases exemplifying beautiful rivers and lakes. Notably, Guiyang's Nanming River emerged as the sole representative from Guizhou, marking the province's inaugural inclusion. Since 2020, the Ministry has annually compiled noteworthy instances of picturesque rivers, lakes, and bays through a combination of public and expert evaluations, ultimately showcasing them as exemplars of environmental excellence in China.

Beautiful rivers, lakes, and bays serve as tangible embodimentof successful practices in implementing President Xi's ecological civilization thought. They showcase the picturesque scene of "lucid water and verdant banks with shallow depths" for rivers and lakes, and "crystal-clear waters, pristine beaches, charming shores, abundant marine life, and harmonious seas teeming with gulls" for bays. These exemplify successful experiences and practices in constructing a beautiful China, representing premium ecological offerings for the community.

The Nanming River, featured in the list, is integral to the Wujiang River system in the Yangtze River Basin. It serves as a vital ecological barrier in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and holds profound importance as the Mother River for Guiyang residents. The Nanming River Comprehensive Treatment Project, administered by the China Water Environment Group, not only addressed environmental concerns but also achieved sustainable development goals, including enhanced efficiency, resource utilization, pollution reduction, and carbon reduction. This project signifies a shift from isolated treatments of water resources, water environment, and water ecology to an integrated approach, restoring the "mother river" to citizens with lucid waters, beautiful shores, teeming fish, and soaring egrets.

It is reported that the criteria for selecting beautiful rivers and lakes hinge on adherence to a management concept encompassing landscape, forest, lake, and grass systems. Effective measures shall be implemented to systematically address ecological challenges in rivers and lakes, ensuring the preservation or restoration of the scenic beauty of "clear water, green shores, and shallow fish", with the goal to significantly improve people's sense of accomplishment and happiness. Selected cases must meet the fundamental criteria of ensuring water in the river, with a harmonious coexistence of fish and grass.

Tourists weave a tapestry of activities along Nanming River

Following the intervention, the main stream of Nanming River now boasts an 80% coverage of submerged plants, a natural coastline that encompasses 90%, and a perfect 100% compliance with ecological flow. The substantial increase in submerged plant coverage, soaring from 15% to 80% pre-treatment, alongside the rejuvenation of 22 fish species and the identification of 49 benthic species, 140 wetland plant species, and 163 algae species, represents the successful attainment of our water environment treatment objective: "Ensuring water in the river, with a harmonious coexistence of fish and grass." This accomplishment has significantly elevated the public's sense of fulfillment and happiness.
